In such case Fat Transfer is the best alternative to non-surgical methods like chin and cheek augmentation to regain required volume for your beautiful face. This safe and long-lasting procedure produces natural-looking results.
What is Fat Transfer Treatment?
Fat transfer (also known as fat grafting) is a procedure that includes harvesting of fat cells from different parts of the body and after purification, injecting them into the area that is meant to be treated. This is done in order to restore attractive contours to your cheeks, chin, jaw line, under-eye area, and to add volume to your lips. It is also done to enhance the volume of different areas such as breasts and butt and to fill acne scars.
Procedure of Fat Transfer Treatment
Fat Transfer Treatment mainly includes three steps:
1. Fat Collection
The first step is to collect fat from donor areas of the body known as harvesting. Donor areas include parts of the body with excessive fat like abdomen, buttocks, outer thighs, medial sites of the knee and arm etc. Fat cells are removed from these areas without any damage to the area, usually via Liposuction surgery.
2. Fat Purification
After the required amount of fat is obtained, the fat undergoes a filtration process to remove impurities. The procedure includes the use of a centrifuge to spin the fat at a high speed. This is done for separating the fat cells from the liquid. Damage fat cells are then separated and discarded while undamaged and whole fat cells are used for treatment.
3. Fat Injection
The receiver area of the face which is meant to receive the graft is then prepared. Purified fat is injected into the requisite areas with the help of a hypodermic syringe. The needle is inserted and passed in and out of the areas to be grafted multiple times in such a way that a line of fatty tissue is carefully deposited in natural fat of the area. The process is repeated, making a matrix of grafted fat, until the desired correction is achieved.

Results of Fat Transfer Treatment
The results of the fat transfer treatment are immediate and the patient can enjoy the results right after the treatment. The results are natural and thus long lasting with no scars or adverse allergic reactions. The best thing about the treatment is that there is no downtime after the procedure is done. The patient does not need to stay in the hospital after the treatment because it is not a surgery but a walk-in walk-out kind of process, so the patient can get back to his/her normal routine within hours or from very next day of the treatment.
How long the results last?
Another important question is that how long lasting the results actually are? A noteworthy advantage of this technique is that the outcomes usually last much longer than the results of other dermal fillers. Individual results may vary but in general the results of a properly conducted procedure may last for years or even permanently.
How Painful Fat Transfer Treatment is?
In general, the pain depends upon the amount of fat that is being transferred. In facial fat transfer procedure little amount of fat is transferred, so in fact, the facial fat transfer is quite painless as compared to the fat transfer done while breast or buttocks enhancement where large amount of fat is transferred. Also, local anesthesia is used before the procedure to make it completely pain free. Patient is hardly conscious during the procedure and wakes up comfortable as soon as the procedure is over.
Risks and Complications of Fat Transfer Treatment
Similar to all the cosmetic treatments, this treatment also carries risks (however slight) alongside its benefits. But fortunately, the risks of fat transfer treatment are few, infrequent and minimal.
- The possible complications include swelling and perhaps bruising as well. The swelling usually vanishes within a week or so.
- Another common risk is the absorption of fat grafted.
- Over-correction or under-correction by putting too much or too little fat.
- Allergic reaction to local anesthetic.
- Other severe complications include infection, bleeding and numbness of skin due to nerve injury but all of these cases are extremely uncommon and rare.
- Unsatisfactory results – Patient being unsatisfied or disappointed by the results is also considered as “risk”. Discuss all your concerns with your surgeon before the treatment.
